The Observer is the college wide student newspaper of Broward College. The foundation's annual fund-raising activity is a golf classic. The second tournament was held in 1989 at Earl Morrall's Arrowhead Golf Club in Davie. Pictured from left to right are Fred Millsaps, Earl Morrall, Dr. Holcombe, Av-Med's Ludy Price, Broward schools superintendent Sam Morgan, and Dr. Larry McFarlane, who first envisioned the idea of a fund-raising golf tournament for the college. Dr. McFarlane conducted the event for its first few years. The 1989 tournament raised more than $15,000 for scholarships and instructional aids. The tournament has also been held at Crystal Lake Country Club, the historic Fort Lauderdale Country Club, and Lago Mar Country Club.

Carlton Moore, a Fort Lauderdale city commissioner, is also among BCC's Distinguished Award winners, as is his wife, Jasmine Shirley-Moore. Carlton Moore was named a recipient in 1988 and Jasmine Shirley-Moore, an epidemiologist, was named a recipient in 1989.

Some of BCC's best and brightest have returned to the college. Dr. Irmgard Bocchino, a Distinguished Alumni Award recipient in 1989, is now the director of the college's acclaimed Honors Institute.
